How solemnisers work in Singapore
- They are licensed volunteers. The Registry of Marriages licenses solemnisers; they are not vendors and do not charge a fee. A token of appreciation is customary — our ang bao guide has the usual amounts.
- You ask them first, then book through ROM. Contact the solemniser from the ROM roster, agree the date and place, then name them in your ROM booking. Weekend and auspicious dates go early, so ask three to six months out.
- At ROM or at your venue. A ceremony at the Registry is short and set; an off-site solemnisation can include your own vows, readings and a bit of the solemniser's personality — which is where the feel matters.
- Language is the first filter. Ceremonies run in English, Mandarin, both, Malay or Tamil, and grandparents notice. Pick the language, then the feel.
